Transforming a Backyard in Franklin, MI:
A Dream Outdoor Space In this short article, we’re excited to share the story of a beautiful backyard transformation we completed in Franklin, Michigan, for one of the Detroit Lions football players. Located in the Franklin/Bloomfield Hills area, this project was both a challenge and a privilege, resulting in a stunning outdoor space designed for relaxation and family enjoyment.
A New Homeowner’s Vision
As newcomers to Michigan, our client sought the guidance of his realtor to find a reliable landscape contractor. After discussing several options, the same name kept coming up. We connected, and after a thorough consultation, we began the design process, listening closely to his vision and needs. The goal was to create a peaceful, tranquil space that would replace an old greenhouse. Interestingly, the greenhouse had become quite the hot commodity, attracting over 200 messages on Facebook Marketplace within just one hour of posting. Who knew greenhouses were so sought after?
A Paver Patio with Style
For the patio, we wanted to match the home’s aesthetic. The house is a beautiful white with black trim, so we chose Unilock’s Opal colorway to complement this color scheme. To add contrast and definition, we used a double border of Holland Premier pavers around the larger patio stones. We laid the pavers in a welcoming pattern that drew people in, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
The Pavilion: From Greenhouse to Gathering Space
Before the pavilion was installed, a greenhouse stood in its place. We replaced it with a 28×14 pavilion that serves as the perfect outdoor retreat. Featuring a shingled roof, a tongue-and-groove ceiling, and compatibility with ceiling fans and electrical appliances, this pavilion is both functional and beautiful. We also added lighting, which was a first for us in a pavilion this size, and it turned out beautifully—perfect for those late-night gatherings. We’re excited to do this again on future projects!
The Motor City Hot Tub
Given the client’s demanding career, relaxation and recovery were priorities. We partnered with Motor City Hot Tubs, selecting a model with:
- Wi-Fi connectivity, multiple jets, lighting, and spacious seating.
The family has shared many photos of them enjoying the new hot tub, proving it’s a perfect addition to their backyard.
Revitalizing Wooden Planter Boxes and Stepping Stones
One unique feature was the repurposing of wooden planter boxes:
- These were overgrown with plants and even held over 100 potatoes in one box!
- We painted the planters black and filled them with boxwoods, adding modern greenery to the space.
Additionally, we installed a courtyard-style walkway using 2×2 stepping stones, providing stability and safety for nighttime strolls while enhancing the overall charm of the backyard.
A Special Project for a Special Family
This backyard transformation was truly special, especially since it was for a member of the Detroit Lions family. We’re proud to have contributed to their outdoor oasis and thrilled to see their success this season.
