Client’s Drainage Problem
The homeowner contacted Odd Jobs Landscaping because their backyard was holding water after rain events.
The property had several common drainage issues, including:
- Uneven and lumpy grading throughout the backyard
- Standing water after rainfall
- Exposed downspout discharge lines
- Water collecting near the foundation and garage
With another wet Michigan season underway, the homeowner wanted to improve drainage and prevent future water accumulation before the problem became worse.

Our Solution
Our team completed this grading and drainage improvement project in a single day.
To improve drainage throughout the property, we:
- Regraded the backyard to establish proper drainage flow
- Created positive drainage away from the home
- Directed water toward the rear of the property
- Buried exposed downspout lines
- Installed pop-up emitters to safely discharge roof runoff
- Prepared the yard for new grass growth with seed and straw
The final grading plan was designed to move water away from the foundation while preventing low spots where standing water could collect.
Drainage Improvements Completed
Downspout Extensions
Several downspouts around the property were previously discharging directly onto the lawn.
Our team buried the downspout lines underground and connected them to pop-up emitters located away from the home.
This allows roof water to move away from the structure before being safely released onto the property.
Yard Regrading
The backyard was reshaped to create consistent drainage patterns.
The finished grade now directs water:
- Away from the home
- Away from the garage
- Toward designated drainage areas at the rear of the property
This helps eliminate ponding water and reduces the likelihood of future drainage problems.
Lawn Restoration
After grading was completed, the disturbed areas were finished with grass seed and straw to establish a new lawn.
As the grass grows in, the property will have a cleaner appearance while maintaining proper drainage performance.
