Is $4,597 too much for a Brick Walkway?

Brick Walkway in West Bloomfield MI

Adding a walkway makes your landscaping more inviting. It becomes easier to get around your home and lead friends and family into your home. The costs for the installation, or even repair, of your walkway, are dependent on a few things. I’ll start with the obvious—size, labor and quality of materials. These three factors make the biggest difference in the total price of your walkway. Let’s start by looking at size.

Professional Contractors

When professional contractors visit you for an estimate they’ll take measurements of the area where it’ll be installed. They will measure the space using sq ft. Here’s an example. The walkway we planned to build in the photo below was 4-foot-wide by 50-foot-long. That equals 200 square feet in total—we multiplied length times width.

Pick Quality Materials

The most popular materials are Concrete, Brick and Stone. There are a variety of bricks and the quality you choose will affect the price. When it comes to brick, it’s all installed the same way. Professionals use construction-grade sand, a gravel base, and grout—so expect your installation costs to be relatively inexpensive. For those of us in West Bloomfield, Bloomfield or Birmingham, I suggest a brick type rated for cold and moisture. The upside of bricks is the endless design options that can add a luxury and expensive feel to your home.

Expect between $20-40 SQFT to install a brick walkway. If you have a taste for the finer things, expect to pay $30 or more per square feet for your well-designed and complex walkway.

Consider using Concrete

A poured concrete patio or walkway is an affordable option. It requires minimum effort, in comparison to other options, and it’s fast. There are no individual pieces to be laid and grouted. However, the cost of labor is an important consideration. It requires experience and practice to do this well. You may want to choose a less expensive option, but trying to cut costs upfront will cost you time and additional money. In the long run, paying the price upfront is better than the time lost repairing and fixing a cheaper patio. If you aren’t sure of how to find a professional, click to read this article.
