Installing a Trex Composite Deck in West Bloomfield: Navigating the ZBA Process

Thank you for reading our blog! Today, we’re sharing the story of a recent project where we installed a Trex composite deck in West Bloomfield, Michigan, and worked through the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) process to get it approved.

The Project: Upgrading to Trex Enhance Composite Deck

In the spring of 2024, a local family contacted us about replacing their old, wooden deck. The existing deck was two levels, and they wanted to upgrade to a Trex Enhance deck for a more modern look and the peace of mind that comes with a long-lasting warranty. To begin, we needed to obtain a permit from the West Bloomfield building department. This led us to the ZBA process.

What is the ZBA Process?

The Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) is where homeowners must go when they need approval to build something that doesn’t fully comply with the local zoning laws. In our case, the West Bloomfield building department had recently updated its regulations to prevent two-level decks from being built on top of one another. Although this presented a challenge, we were able to successfully make our case to the board, explaining why our project should be approved despite the new rules. Thankfully, the board agreed, and we got the green light to move forward.

Building the Trex Composite Deck

With the ZBA approval in hand, we got to work on the deck. We chose Trex composite materials because they’re durable, low-maintenance, and stylish. To add some visual interest, we used two different colors of Trex decking. We also included the Trex RainEscape system
